Annual Autumn Fest to be Held October 17

The Town of Burgaw Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department is gearing up to host many upcoming Fall Events this year, including the Town’s annual Autumn Fest in downtown Burgaw.

“Autumn Fest is our annual Fall Festival with a little something for everyone,” stated Codie McGrew, Recreation Supervisor for the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. This one-day family-friendly festival invites those of all ages in Burgaw and surrounding communities on October 17th at the Pender County Courthouse Square. To kick-start the day, community members can register to participate in the Boo-Gaw 1 Mile race, or the Graveyard 5k.

Following the races, Arts, Crafts and Food Vendors will be set up at starting at 10:00 am. Live bluegrass music from MariBella and the Pigkickers, as well as Shannon Baker and sometime soon will be playing throughout the day on the main stage. Pumpkin decorating, axe throwing, mini golf, face painting, inflatables, a costume contest, a magic show, and so much more will be available throughout the day, including a pizza eating contest sponsored by Fat Daddy’s Pizza!

The Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce is also excited to announce their first annual Shrimp Showdown on Courthouse Avenue from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. “Come taste amazing shrimp dishes from local businesses and let us know your favorite,” shared Jeana Lindbert, Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. The winner will be highlighted at this year’s annual Shrimp-A-Roo event hosted by the Chamber on October 29th.

Town of Burgaw in remembrance of 9/11

September 11, 2001: Twenty-Five Years Later

“Where were you that day?”

It is a question we have asked one another for 25 years. For those of us old enough to remember September 11, 2001, the answer often comes quickly. We remember where we were, who we were with, and how an ordinary Tuesday morning suddenly became a day our nation would never forget.

We remember the confusion as the first reports came in. We remember watching in disbelief as the events unfolded. We remember the fear, the heartbreak, and the realization that our country—and our lives—had changed.

In our house, there is also something about the time 9:11. It seems that we happen to glance at the clock at that exact moment more often. Whenever those numbers appear, they make us stop and pause just a little differently than at any other time of day. And for a brief moment, we remember.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape. We remember the passengers and crew members who showed extraordinary courage. We remember the members of our military and their families whose lives and service were forever shaped by what happened that day. We also remember those who continue to live with the physical and emotional effects of September 11.

But our memories of that time include something else, too. In the days that followed, Americans came together. We checked on our neighbors, displayed our flags, filled our churches, and stood united in grief and resolve. Our differences seemed smaller because we were reminded of what we shared.

Twenty-five years later, many young people know about September 11 only through history books, photographs, and the stories we tell. That makes our responsibility to remember—and to teach—even more important. We must tell them not only about the tragedy, but also about the courage, sacrifice, compassion, and unity that followed. We must help them understand that freedom is precious, service is honorable, and caring for one another is one of the greatest ways we can strengthen our communities and our country.

I invite our community to pause this September 11. Remember where you were. Say a prayer for the families and for those who still carry the weight of that day. Thank a first responder, a member of our military, or a veteran.

Twenty-five years later, may we still honor the promise our nation made that we will never forget.

-Mayor Dawson

Highlights from the September 8, 2026 Town Council Meeting

COUNCIL MEETING RECAP

Cellular Service Improvements Underway

We hear you—and efforts are underway to improve cellular service in our community.

Following concerns from residents and the Town Council’s recent call for improved cellular coverage, Town staff have been actively working with service providers to explore solutions.

During the September meeting, staff reported that Verizon is working with the Town on a temporary solution to help improve cellular service in the near term, while plans move forward toward a more permanent solution to strengthen coverage and reliability throughout the community.

Reliable cellular service remains an important priority for the Town, particularly for public safety and emergency communications, as well as for residents, businesses, visitors, and continued economic growth. Staff will continue working with Verizon and other service providers as improvement options move forward.

Continued Training & Leadership in Service to Our Town

Several employees were recognized for recently completing professional training, certifications, and specialized programs. These accomplishments reflect the continued commitment of Town employees to professional growth, public safety, and providing quality service to the our community. Congratulations on their accomplishments and continued dedication to serving the Town of Burgaw!

Council Approves Subdivision and Sign Ordinance Updates

Following a quasi-judicial hearing, Council approved a major subdivision preliminary plat submitted by Funston Company, Inc. for a proposed 139-lot, single-family residential subdivision located on NC Highway 53 West near Tealbriar Subdivision.

Council also approved an amendment to the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance regarding electronic changeable copy signs. Recognizing Constitution Week

The Town of Burgaw is proud to recognize September 17–23, 2026, as Constitution Week, following an official proclamation issued by Mayor Olivia Dawson.

This year marks the 239th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States, which was completed by the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The Constitution continues to serve as the foundation of our nation’s government and as a guardian of the liberties and freedoms enjoyed by Americans.

Constitution Week is observed each year from September 17 through September 23 to recognize this historic document and the principles upon which our nation was founded. In her proclamation, Mayor Dawson encourages Burgaw citizens to reaffirm the ideals of the Framers and remain mindful of the importance of protecting the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

As we observe Constitution Week, the Town encourages our community to take a moment to reflect on the Constitution’s lasting role in American government and civic life.
