Our T own
Published weekly by the Town of Burgaw | July 20-24, 2026
Construction is officially underway on the
highly anticipated community splash pad! As
work begins, the green space at Hankins Park
will be temporarily closed until further notice.
This exciting new addition will create
opportunities for families to cool off, play
together, and make lasting memories for
years to come.
While the green space will be closed during
construction, the park's bathrooms and pavilion will remain open and
available for public use.
We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as this exciting
project moves forward. The good news is that construction isn't
expected to take long, so stay tuned for updates as we get closer to
opening day - we will be making big splashes soon, Burgaw!

Don’t forget to show your lawn
some love this summer!
Regular mowing not only keeps your yard looking
neat but also helps maintain the charm of our
beautiful town. A well -kept lawn is a small but
meaningful way to contribute to our shared
community pride. So, dust off those lawnmowers
and let's make our town shine!
REMINDER: High grass and blowing grass clippings
into the street is against town ordinance!

Highlights from the July 14th Town Council Meeting
COUNCIL MEETING RECAP
Highlights from Council
• Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce provided an
update to the Town Council and community,
highlighting significant membership growth,
expanded community programming, increased
visitor services, and successful business
engagement initiatives.
• Property owner and retired architect John
Westbrook presented a conceptual proposal for
future Wright Street streetscape improvements,
prompting Council discussion on potential
enhancements, preserving existing sidewalks
where practical, and evaluating future funding
opportunities.
• Splash Pad construction remains on schedule, with
work expected to begin soon with an anticipated
opening before Labor Day. A community ribbon -
cutting celebration is being planned with more
details forthcoming.
• The Police Department announced its inaugural
National Night Out, scheduled for Tuesday, August
4, inviting the community to enjoy an evening of
family fun while building relationships with
neighbors, town officials, local law enforcement
and first responders.
• Following the Town Council's previous approval to
purchase a new street sweeper, Council finalized
the financing at its July meeting. With the
equipment now on site, staff and Council look
forward to placing it into service to help keep
Burgaw's streets cleaner and better maintained for
residents and visitors alike.
• Council discussed additional pedestrian safety
improvements, including enhanced crosswalk
signage and other measures to encourage use of
flashing pedestrian beacons.
• The Town officially acquired the former American
Legion building on South Wright Street. Due to the
building's deteriorated condition and state of
disrepair, the Town will move forward with
soliciting demolition bids. During previous
discussions, members of the American Legion
requested that the property be transformed into a
veterans memorial park with play amenities for
children. The Town looks forward to exploring
future opportunities for the site following
demolition.
• The Town received a $90,000 state appropriation
to replace the Fire Department's firefighter air
tank cascade system, improving emergency
response capabilities.
• Following concerns raised by a citizen during
Public Forum, the Town Council directed staff to
contact Pender County and formally request
maintenance improvements to the Pender County
Courthouse Square, including filling uneven areas
and improving the grounds to enhance safety for
residents and visitors attending downtown events.
• Staff and the Town Council are excited to
announce that regular Town Council meetings will
now be livestreamed on YouTube, providing
residents with an additional convenient way to
watch meetings alongside the Town's website.
