Communication is one of the most important responsibilities of local government. Residents rely on the Town's
Facebook page for updates on meetings, public notices, community events, emergency information, projects, and
other important news that affects daily life in our community.
Recently, the Town made the decision to disable comments on its official Facebook page. We understand that some
residents may have questions about this change, and we want to provide some insight into why this decision was made
and what it means moving forward.
The Town's Facebook page is intended to serve as an official communication channel. It allows us to quickly share
accurate information with residents and visitors while ensuring that important announcements are easily accessible to
everyone.
While social media platforms provide opportunities for discussion, they also present unique challenges for government
agencies. Unlike personal or private business accounts, local governments must consider legal obligations, public
records requirements, consistency in moderation, and the appropriate use of taxpayer-funded resources.
When a local government operates a social media page, comments and interactions may be considered public records.
Managing and monitoring social media comments requires staff time and resources. As a local government, our priority
is serving residents through essential services, public safety, infrastructure improvements, community programs, and
responsive customer service.
Public Input Remains Important
Residents continue to have numerous opportunities to share feedback, ask questions, and engage with Town
leadership, including:
• Attending Town Council meetings
• Participating in public hearings
• Contacting Town Hall by phone

timely information while maintaining responsible stewardship of public resources and complying with applicable laws
and regulations.
We value the voices of our residents.
