NEWSLETTER
Our T own
Published weekly by the Town of Burgaw | March 30-April 2, 2026
The Town of Burgaw Public Services Department will
implement an updated collection schedule for yard debris,
white goods, and construction and demolition (C&D)
materials beginning April 6, 2026. This adjustment is
designed to improve efficiency and help maintain the
cleanliness and appearance of our community.
With spring in full swing, many residents are taking
advantage of the beautiful weather to begin outdoor
landscaping and home improvement projects. As April marks
National Safe Digging Month, the Town of Burgaw would like
to remind everyone to always call NC811 before starting any
digging project.
NC811 is a free service that notifies local utility providers of
your planned digging activity. In response, utility companies
will mark the locations of underground lines —helping you
avoid accidental damage to essential services such as water,
power, and communications.
Damage to underground utilities occurs more often than
many realize. In fact, every nine minutes, a utility line is
damaged because someone begins digging without first
contacting 811. These incidents can lead to serious
consequences, including injury, costly repairs, service
disruptions, and potential fines.
Whether you are installing a fence, planting a tree, or
building a deck, taking a few moments to contact NC811
before you dig can save time, money, and prevent
unnecessary risk. Residents are also reminded to contact
Town officials prior to beginning projects such as fence
installation or deck construction, as permits may be required
before work can begin.
See lines and flags on your
property? Visit nc811.org for more
information and a helpful guide to
what each color represents. To
schedule a locate request prior to
digging, call 811 or 1 -800-632-
4949.
Help keep our community safe this
spring—call 811 before you dig.
We wish everyone a
Reminder from our Public Services Department

Growing Through Service: The North
Carolina Mayors Association
Mayor Dawson’s Latest Blog on the Town Website
COMMUNITY CONNECTION
When I first had the honor of becoming mayor, I knew one thing for certain—leadership is not something you do alone.
It’s something you grow into, learn from, and strengthen through collaboration with others who share the same
commitment to their communities.
That’s why one of the first things I did after taking office was jump right into the North Carolina Mayors Association,
where I have been serving on the board since 2022, as Vice President this year, and I will become the President of that
organization in May.
From the beginning, I saw it as an opportunity to grow, learn, and get involved with a network of leaders who care
deeply about the towns and cities they serve.
Being part of the North Carolina Mayors Association and the NC League of Municipalities means connecting with
leaders from across our state—large cities, small towns, and everything in between. While our communities may differ
in size or geography, many of the challenges and opportunities we face are remarkably similar.
Through meetings, conversations, and collaborative discussions, I ’ve learned from mayors who have faced similar
issues—whether in economic development, infrastructure, community engagement, or planning for the future.
There’s something powerful about being able to say, “How did your town handle this? ” and receiving real, practical
insight from someone who has walked that path before.
For me, joining the Mayors Association was about more than networking. It was about becoming a better leader for our
community.
Leadership is a continuous learning process. The more we expose ourselves to new ideas, best practices, and
perspectives, the better equipped we are to serve the people who trust us with this responsibility.
The association provides opportunities for mayors to share ideas, discuss policy, and learn from one another,
ultimately strengthening communities across North Carolina.
Every conversation, workshop, or discussion offers insights that can inspire new ways of thinking about how we
support local businesses, improve the quality of life, and plan for the future of our town.
It reminds me that while our town may be unique, we are part of a much larger network of communities all working
toward the same goal—creating places where people are proud to live, work, and visit.
Being mayor is both a responsibility and a privilege. It ’s about listening, learning, and leading with the community's
best interests in mind.
By learning from others and staying engaged with leaders across
our state, I believe we can continue to strengthen not just our
own town, but communities throughout North Carolina.
And I’m proud to be part of that effort.
