Expanding Walkability
Mayor Dawson’s Latest Blog on the Town Website
The Town of Burgaw continues to take meaningful steps toward creating a more walkable and connected
community. With the completion of Phase Two of expanding the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail, a
segment of North Carolina ’s Mountains -to-Sea Trail. The west side of town now features expanded
sidewalks and trail access, inviting residents and visitors alike to enjoy more of Burgaw at a slower, more
scenic pace.
This trail is a vibrant community asset that promotes health, connectivity, and outdoor recreation.
This newest phase extends the trail network along the historic Osgood Canal corridor, enhancing the ability
to walk, bike, and explore more of Burgaw safely and comfortably.
Sidewalks and multi-use trails do more than create places to walk — they help shape the way a community
lives and connects.
With this expansion, Burgaw is continuing to invest in infrastructure that supports:
• Walkability — Safe and accessible routes for pedestrians
• Connectivity — Linking neighborhoods, parks, and downtown
• Healthy living — Encouraging outdoor recreation and active lifestyles
• Community interaction — Creating spaces where neighbors can gather and explore together
By expanding sidewalks and trails on the west side of town, more residents can now enjoy a direct
connection to Burgaw’s outdoor spaces and scenic waterways.
Celebrating the Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail
The Osgood Canal has long been part of Burgaw’s story. An important waterway for the area’s development,
the canal today offers a peaceful natural setting right in the heart of town.
The trail brings life to this historic corridor, transforming it into a place where people can:
• Take a morning walk
• Bike with family and friends
• Enjoy nature close to home
The expansion ensures that more of the trail can be
appreciated as a community asset — blending history, nature,
and recreation.
Walkable communities often see benefits that go far beyond
recreation — including stronger local businesses, healthier
residents, and a greater sense of place.
