Tree Planting Ceremony
will be held at 3:00 PM at
the corner of Dudley
Street and Bridgers Street.
This year, we are giving
away free 1-gallon live
oak trees. Must be a
Town of Burgaw resident
within the corporate
limits. Only one tree per
household.
Visit BurgawNC.gov/trees
for information and to
register for the tree
giveaway.
The Town of Burgaw is proud to announce that it has once again been awarded the
2025 Tree City USA designation, a national recognition that highlights the Town ’s
ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing its urban forest.
Tree City USA, an annual program led by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizes
communities that prioritize the care and management of public trees. The program
raises awareness about the important role trees play in our daily lives, sets
foundational standards for communities of all sizes, and celebrates local efforts that
improve and protect the environment.
Trees provide numerous benefits that enhance both the beauty and livability of a
community. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, trees can absorb up to 40 percent
of urban traffic noise, helping create quieter and more peaceful neighborhoods. They
also play an important role in regulating temperatures, with tree -lined areas often
measuring seven to nine degrees cooler than neighborhoods without trees. By shading
buildings in the summer and protecting them from winter winds, trees can reduce
energy costs by as much as 25 percent.
Beyond environmental benefits, trees also contribute to stronger and healthier
communities. Homes surrounded by trees often see higher property values, and
access to green space has been shown to improve both mental and physical well -
being. Trees also play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,
helping to mitigate the effects of climate change and improve air quality.
Burgaw’s continued recognition as a Tree City USA community reflects the dedication
of town staff, elected officials, and engaged citizens who work together to preserve
and grow the community’s tree canopy. Their efforts help ensure that Burgaw remains
a beautiful, welcoming, and environmentally responsible place to live, work, and visit.
As spring arrives, residents are encouraged to plant a tree and take part in caring for
Burgaw’s natural resources. Together, these efforts help strengthen our community
and ensure that Burgaw continues to thrive for generations to come.

UPCOMING
Parks, Recreation & Tourism staff is excited to announce the
completion of the West Side Trail project, an expansion of the
Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail that enhances the
community’s growing network of walking and biking paths. With
the addition of this new segment, Burgaw ’s trail system now
extends to a total of approximately four miles, offering even
more outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors,
while promoting healthy lifestyles and community connectivity.
Town officials invite residents and community members to join
them in celebrating the official opening of the newest portion of
the trail during a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on April 2 at 8:00 AM.
The event will take place at the corner of Bridgers Street and
Dudley Street, where the public is encouraged to gather and help
mark this exciting milestone for the community.
You may notice several projects happening around town as we
continue working to improve Burgaw’s infrastructure, safety, and
downtown appearance. From water line replacements to traffic
safety improvements, and continued work on the Courthouse
Avenue Revitalization Project, there’s a lot of progress underway.
We’re also excited to be wrapping up the Westside Trail project,
which will soon provide another great outdoor space for our
community to enjoy.
These projects will help provide reliable water service, safer
intersections, improved sidewalks, and enhanced downtown
lighting and streetscapes for our residents, businesses, and
visitors.
We know construction and improvements can sometimes cause
temporary inconveniences, and we truly appreciate your
patience and cooperation as we continue working to make
Burgaw even better.
