Our Town. Our Story.
Celebrating 147 Years of Burgaw
Every town has a story and we have ours. Established in
1879, our community has grown from its humble
beginnings into the charming and welcoming town we
all love today.
For 147 years, Burgaw has been a place where tradition
and progress come together, where neighbors support
one another, and where we continue to build on the
foundations laid by those who came before us.
From railroad roots and agricultural heritage to a
thriving historic downtown, Burgaw ’s story is one of
resilience, vision, and community pride.
Burgaw’s early growth was fueled by the railroad and
agriculture. Over time, blueberries and farming
traditions helped shape our identity — and still do. From
seasonal festivals to small -town gatherings on the
courthouse square, we continue to celebrate the
heritage that brought us here.
As mayor and as a proud member of this community, I
often reflect on how that moment in history continues
to influence who we are and where we’re going.
Happy 147th Birthday, Burgaw!
Mayor Dawson
Board of Commissioners to hold
Annual Strategic Planning Retreat
The Burgaw Board of Commissioners will hold its annual
Strategic Planning Retreat on March 2 and 3 at the
Burgaw Town Center, beginning at 9:00 AM each day.
This special meeting provides an opportunity for the
Board and Town staff to collaborate, review priorities,
and prepare for the upcoming fiscal year budget.
During the retreat, discussions will focus on long -term
planning, departmental needs, capital projects, and
strategic goals to ensure continued responsible growth
and service to the community.
As with all official meetings, the retreat is open to the
public, and all interested parties are invited to attend.
These upgrades are part of our ongoing commitment to
providing safe, reliable, and high-quality water service for
every resident, business, and visitor.
Our Public Works team and trusted contractors are
replacing aging water lines and upgrading infrastructure.
Many of our existing lines are original to the system and
due for replacement. These improvements will:
• Reduce the risk of leaks and breaks
• Improve water reliability and quality
• Support future growth and development
• Lower long-term maintenance costs
Our team is working hard to complete these projects as
efficiently and safely as possible. We truly appreciate
your patience, cooperation, and understanding as we
make these important upgrades.

UPCOMING
Downtown and Courthouse Avenue
Revitalization Project
You may have noticed sidewalk repairs and
construction activity happening in our
downtown and along Courthouse Avenue
— and we’re excited to share that this is all
part of our continued revitalization efforts!
These improvements are focused on making
our downtown safer, more walkable, and
even more inviting for residents, visitors,
and local businesses.
What’s happening now and what’s ahead:
• Sidewalk repairs and accessibility upgrades
• Power lines being placed underground for a cleaner,
more attractive streetscape
• Additional post lighting to enhance charm, safety, and
visibility
• And more improvements to come—stay tuned!
This investment reflects our commitment to preserving
Burgaw’s historic character while building a vibrant future.
Thank you for your patience during construction —the end
result will be something our entire community can be proud
of.
The workshop covered key areas of municipal governance —
from ethics and finance to planning, roles, and
responsibilities—providing a valuable perspective on how we
can best serve our residents and support our staff. Local
government decisions directly
impact everyday life, and
continuing education like this
helps ensure those decisions are
thoughtful, transparent, and
grounded in best practices and
state municipal laws.

Local Wellhead Protection Program Plan
The Town of Burgaw, with assistance from the North Carolina Rural
Water Association, is in the process of updating a Local Wellhead
Protection Program Plan. This is a voluntary program intended to
assist us in protecting the system ’s water supply from
contamination, and to identify vulnerable areas around our wells
called the “Wellhead Protection Areas ”. Another goal of this
program is to make residents and businesses aware that chemicals
and other pollutants spilled or dumped in the vicinity of the
“Wellhead Protection Areas ” can be drawn into the wells, possibly
contaminating the system’s drinking water supply.
The Town is asking for your assistance in developing this program.
A draft copy of the Wellhead Protection Plan will be available for
review and comment on the town ’s website and at the Burgaw
Town Hall, located at 109 North Walker Street, Burgaw, NC 28425.
You are invited to review the program and submit any comments
or suggestions to the Town of Burgaw. All written public
comments will be reviewed by the Wellhead Protection
Committee, and any suggestions or comments that may be
beneficial will be incorporated into the program. Comments on the
draft will be received for 30 days.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact
Town Hall at 910-259-2151.
