Published weekly by the Town of Burgaw | October 13-17, 2025
The Town of Burgaw Board of Commissioners has officially
approved the retirement of Police K -9 “Kane” and
authorized his adoption by his longtime handler, Sgt.
Thomas Padgett. K -9 Kane has faithfully served the Burgaw
Police Department for several years, assisting in narcotics
detection, suspect apprehension, tracking, and community
engagement.
Due to age and health considerations,
Kane will retire from active duty
effective October 30, 2025, and new K -
9, Omen, will be sworn in to continue
serving the Burgaw community. The
Board expressed its gratitude for
Kane’s loyal service and commended
both him and Sgt. Padgett for their
dedication to public safety. Upon
retirement, ownership of Kane will
transfer to Sgt. Padgett, who will
provide him with a loving home.
