Published weekly by the Town of Burgaw | August 4-8, 2025
In the State of the Town Address on August 7th, Mayor Dawson
celebrated Burgaw ’s strong growth, rich history, and community
spirit, highlighting recent achievements such as downtown
revitalization, park improvements, business growth, facility upgrades,
and progress on infrastructure master plans. Looking ahead, priorities
include continued street, sidewalk, and utility upgrades, expanded
parks and recreation amenities, downtown enhancements, and public
safety investments, all while managing growth pressures, parking
challenges, and budget constraints. The $10.94M budget, supported
by a modest property tax increase, focuses on infrastructure, safety,
and quality of life, with a commitment to fiscal responsibility,
community engagement, and preserving Burgaw’s small-town charm.

A quasi-judicial hearing is a special type of meeting where a
board or committee makes a decision that is similar to what a
judge would do in court.
In simple terms:
• It’s not a regular public meeting where people just share
opinions.
• It’s more formal and rule-based — like a mini court
hearing.
• The board has to listen to evidence, follow the law, and
stay neutral.
• People who speak must have factual information or expert
knowledge (not just personal opinions).
• Decisions must be based only on the facts presented at the
hearing — not personal feelings or outside pressure.
These hearings often happen when deciding things like:
• Special use permits
• Variances
• Zoning appeals
So, think of it as the board putting on a judge’s hat to make a
fair and legal decision about someone’s property or request.
