Flag Retirement Box now available at Town Hall
Special thanks to rising Eagle Scout Kyle Buck and Wilmington Boy Scout Troop #232 for their hard work
and dedication in installing a flag retirement box outside of our Town Hall.
If you have a worn or tattered American flag, you can now properly retire it with honor and respect by
dropping it in the new collection box, located at 109 N. Walker Street, next to Burgaw Fire Department.
Thank you, Kyle and Troop #232, for your service to the community and commitment to honoring our
nation's flag!
The Town of Burgaw is proud to recognize Juneteenth as a significant day in American
history, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. In honor of this important
observance, the Town has designated Juneteenth as a floating paid holiday for all municipal
employees, allowing staff the opportunity to take time for reflection, education, and
celebration.
Juneteenth, officially observed on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received
word of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This day has become a symbol
of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.
In addition to recognizing the holiday for its staff, the Town of Burgaw is pleased to be a proud sponsor of the upcoming
Juneteenth Celebration taking place on Saturday, June 28th from 10 AM to 4 PM on the Courthouse Square. The event
promises to be a vibrant and meaningful occasion filled with community fellowship, music, local vendors, cultural
performances, and educational moments that honor the legacy of Juneteenth.
Mayor Olivia Dawson shared, “We believe it is important to acknowledge the historical significance of Juneteenth and to
support opportunities for our community to come together in recognition of freedom and progress. We are honored to be part
of this celebration and to support our employees in observing this important day.”
The Town encourages all residents and visitors to attend the Juneteenth Celebration and join in recognizing the importance of
Juneteenth as a day of remembrance and unity.
