Our T own
Published weekly by the Town of Burgaw | April 28-May 2, 2025
Happy Friday and Happy May!
Spring is in full bloom, and there’s no better way to celebrate than at the
Pender Spring Fest —a beloved annual tradition, this weekend. Come
celebrate and be a part of the activities Friday evening and Saturday.
Myself, Mayor Pro -Tem Malloy, and Commissioner Pearsall spent time
representing our community this week at the NCLM CityVision
Conference 2025—a gathering of passionate leaders from across North
Carolina who are all working toward the same goal: building stronger, smarter, and more vibrant towns
and cities.
Next week we look forward to recognizing our town's small businesses during Small Business Week. As
Mayor of the Town of Burgaw, it is my honor to recognize and celebrate National Small Business Week —
May 4th through the 10th, a dedicated time to uplift and appreciate the small businesses that serve as
the backbone of our community.
We are proud to see how these occasions continue to bring our community together and showcase what
makes Burgaw special.

MAYOR’S PROCLAMATI ON
SUMMER ON THE SQUARE
WHEREAS America’s strongest economic growth in almost 42
years has been driven by the resilience of our small businesses
that, despite a worldwide pandemic, continue to pioneer
innovative solutions to our country ’s greatest challenges and
create opportunities for families and workers; and
WHEREAS small businesses remain the heartbeat of our
communities and the American economy, employing more than
half of our Nation ’s workers, inventing and innovating to launch
new technologies and create new American-led industries,
enriching our Main Streets, making parts and products in
America to fuel our supply chains, and building our Nation ’s
infrastructure; and
WHEREAS historic investments made through the President’s
American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act,
CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act will ensure
small businesses have access to federal capital support, technical
assistance, contracting opportunities, and other resources to
help lead the way as we rebuild America’s roads and bridges and
build a clean energy economy for the future; and
WHEREAS when we support small businesses, jobs are created,
and local communities preserve their unique culture; and
WHEREAS entrepreneurship continues to be one of the best
pathways to the American Dream, evidenced by the remarkable
small business boom, with more than 10.5 million Americans
applying to start a business since January 20, 2021 — more than
in any other two-year period in American history; and
WHEREAS by renewing our commitment to supporting small
businesses, we can maintain our global competitiveness and
build a stronger Nation where everyone can succeed - from the
bottom up and middle out; and
WHEREAS the President of the United States has proclaimed
National Small Business Week every year since 1963 to highlight
the programs and services available to entrepreneurs through
the U.S. Small Business Administration and other government
agencies; and
WHEREAS the Town of Burgaw supports and joins in this national
effort to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the
American economy and their importance to ensuring that our
local communities remain as vibrant tomorrow as they are
today.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Olivia Dawson, Mayor of the Town of
Burgaw, do hereby proclaim May 4 through May 10, 2025, as
National Small Business Week.
WITNESS MY HAND AND SEAL, this 1st day of May, 2025.
Mayor Dawson

2025 has been rescheduled for May 19, 2025 at 9:00 AM. The purpose of

The weather is getting warmer and

obtain an accurate reading before and

TOWN WIDE
MOSQUITO
SPRAYING
We would like to remind
our residents if you have
beehives or other
sensitive wildlife that can
be affected by the
chemicals used in
mosquito spraying, please
let us know by emailing
your name, address, and
phone number to
cabbood@burgawnc.gov
so we can add your
address to the ‘no-spray’
areas.
For questions or concerns,
please call 259-2901.
Did you know...
It is against the Town’s Municipal Code to deposit your grass clippings and other yard waste into the road. Grass clippings
are made mostly of water and can create unsafe road conditions especially for motorcycle and bicycle riders.
Yard debris build up can also get caught in the Town’s storm drain system and can cause drainage issues and localized
flooding.
Instead, you can…
• Take a few passes near the roadway with an unenclosed blower towards your yard.
• Bag your clippings and other yard waste to be picked up by Public Works.
• Mix grass clippings with leaves and soil to make a backyard compost pile.
• Leave the clippings on your lawn allowing grass clippings to decompose and release
water and nutrients back into your lawn’s soil.
We encourage everyone to help the Town maintain a safe roadway environment for all users!
