We’ve been MIA for a few weeks but we are back!
February 2nd through February 8th is National Burn Awareness Week
This year ’s theme is “Burn Prevention Starts Where You Live ” and
employs multiple tips to help reduce burn hazards in kitchens,
bathrooms, sleeping areas, and storage spaces. Burns can happen to
anyone of any age. For those who are unable to take care of
themselves make sure to be proactive to keep them from getting
burned.
Prevent Burn Injuries Where You Live Some key tips include:
• Kitchen Safety: Store flammable items away from heat, turn pot handles inward, and never leave cooking food
unattended.
• Bathroom Precautions: Set your water heater below 120°F and supervise children in the bath.
• Sleeping Areas: Extinguish candles before sleeping and keep heat sources away from fabrics.
• General Home Safety: Test smoke alarms regularly, charge devices safely, and store chemicals out of reach.
In 2021, burn injuries continued to be significant public issue, with
more than 398,000 people seeking medical care for burns in the United
States.
We urge everyone to check those smoke alarms for their monthly tests
if you have not yet. Remember each month test them! Smoke alarms
save lives, and if you need smoke alarms you can reach out to us for
them.
We are always looking for volunteers as well, have you ever dreamed
of putting on the helmet, the gear, and making a difference? Now is
your chance. We need volunteers more than ever.
Until next week,
Your Friends at Burgaw Fire Department
Happy First Week of February everyone!

• Blow yard waste back onto a landscaped area, not into
the street or storm drain.
• Collect and contain yard waste for yard debris pick-ups.
• Grasscycle! Grass clippings can stay on the lawn to
provide nutrients and moisture to the soil and reduce the
need for fertilizer.
• Compost yard waste and use material in landscape beds.
• Keep all drains, drainage ditches and drainage ways free
of obstructions.
• Do not blow, sweep, dump, direct or place yard debris,
sediment, or trash into any street, storm drain, ditch,
creek, or waterway.
• Do not put yard waste in the regular trash; it is not
allowed in NC landfills.
You can help Public Works keep drainage and ditches
clear by being careful and preventing yard waste,
sediment, trash, and debris from entering our ditches
and drainageways.
DO:
DON’T:
Public Works would like to remind everyone to keep
your yard debris for pickup on the right-of-way, not in
the road. If it is in the road small sticks and branches
can end up in our storm drains causing flooding or get
stuck in our street sweeper brushes. Please be mindful
of where you put your yard debris!
