Exciting Updates from Our Department
We are pleased to announce the addition of three new personnel to our
team! On Tuesday night, we swore in Joey Williams Jr., Mike Willingmyre,
and Parker Brown as the newest members of our department. These
individuals bring valuable skills and experience, and we are thrilled to have
them on board as we continue our commitment to serving the community.
In addition to welcoming new team members, we are proud to recognize
several of our own for their outstanding efforts in life -saving measures. On
the same evening, we honored Joey Smith, Brent Stophel, Hagen Blake, and
Landon Harrell with Life Saving Awards for their heroic actions during a
recent emergency call. Their quick thinking and professionalism led to a man
being discharged from the hospital, and we are grateful for their dedication
and skill.
Please join us in welcoming Joey, Mike, and Parker to the team, and
congratulating Joey, Brent, Hagen, and Landon for their life -saving
contributions.
We look forward to continuing our work to make this community a safer
place, thanks to the dedication of all our personnel.
This month is Carbon Monoxide Safety Awareness Month. Carbon Monoxide
is often referred to as the invisible killer. This is because carbon monoxide is
an odorless, colorless gas that is created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood,
coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. CO
poisoning has a few symptoms that include shortness of breath, nausea,
dizziness, light headedness, or headaches. High levels of CO can be fatal and
can lead to death within minutes.
Make sure that you have a Carbon Monoxide Alarm installed in a central
location outside each sleeping room. Alarms should also be on every level of
the home. Just like smoke alarms they should be checked monthly to make
sure they are still working properly.
These types of alarms can be picked up at your local Walmart, hardware
store, Lowes, or Home Depot.
As colder weather moves in, we want to remind everyone that it is easier to
prevent incidents than to react to them.

Burgaw’s First Service Station
HI STORI CAL FEATURE OF THE WEEK
The first “Filling Station” in town was a trough of water in the main
section of town for the horses, but with the town growing in vehicle
population, the need arose for a vehicle service station. The first
service station in Burgaw was Blake ’s. The original building was a
10’x10’ building built in 1932. An addition was added to the building
in 1940 to make the building a 10’x20’ and the sale of groceries was
added. Business was so good in 1945 the Blakes had to build a larger
building; the size of 26’x32’.
When the first service station was built in 1932, no streets in the Town
of Burgaw were paved with the exception of Hwy 40, which is now
known as Hwy 117—Business. Gas prices in 1932 were $0.17 per
gallon or $0.35 for five gallons.
