It’s Officially November
We hope everyone is surviving the sugar induced hangovers from all the treats last night!
We would like to express out gratitude to everyone who made October such a productive and wonderful fire
prevention month.
We ended the month with a total of 31 events (either Fire Safety School visits, events hosted at the fire
department, or fire safety at workplace visits). We hosted our first ever Chalk it Up for Fire Safety, Sips for Safety,
and even a Fire Safety for Homeschoolers event.
We truly can not be more thankful for all these firsts that we were able to celebrate with our community.
Along with our events, our Fire Marshal and crews installed 23 smoke alarms in residences in conjunction with our
Red Cross program. This is incredible as this year's theme focused on the importance of smoke alarms.
We welcomed our newest fleet addition Utility 15, a side by side that will allow us to provide protection in areas not
accessible by vehicles. This month also brought the delivery of our newest training prop, a forcible entry door that
will allow us to continue to better ourselves for real life scenarios.
We can’t wait to see what next fire prevention month holds! We look forward to the rest of this year.
Remember if you need smoke alarms, please reach out to our Fire Marshal by phone or email. She can work with
you to make sure you have what is needed.
Until next week,
Your friends at Burgaw Fire Department

Chester A. Dixon, a school teacher in Maple Hill, had a few errands to run on the afternoon of
Saturday October 5, 1946. He came to Burgaw, and parked his car on the side of the street and
proceeded to shop the numerous shops that were located on Wright and Fremont Streets. When he
had concluded his shopping trip, he proceeded to where he had parked his car —only to find that it
was not there. It had been stolen.
PFC US Army WWII Veteran Raymond Blackburn Garner,
of Warsaw, was employed as a taxi cab driver. His
passenger that afternoon was a Marine from Camp
Lejeune, Dunie W. Smith, who left his post on October 3,
1946 and was considered AWOL. As they traveled through
downtown Burgaw, they spotted a car, a car they wanted.
Garner parked the car he was driving and they walked up
to Dixon’s car while Smith acted as the lookout. Garner got the car started and they took off down the
road heading south on Highway 117.
Out patrolling Highway 117 that afternoon, was NC Highway Patrolman Riddick. He noticed that
the car that Garner was driving was moving erratically. Patrolman Riddick pulled the car over and
questioned Garner. Being suspicious of the answers that Garner was providing, Patrolman Riddick
contacted Sheriff Brown and ascertained that the car he had pulled over had in fact been stolen.
Patrolman Riddick placed 23 year old Raymond Garner under arrest and charged him with reckless
driving and possession of a stolen vehicle. He also arrested and charged Dunie Smith for possession
of a stolen vehicle.
