forget to visit us on Halloween next week!
We have included some Halloween safety tips for
this upcoming week! Make sure all kids can be
seen. This can be done with glow sticks.

A Fish Tale
HI STORI CAL FEATURE OF THE WEEK
On Friday April 18, 1947, Barnard Lewis, Dr. Ivey
Taylor, Jr., Grover Scott, Bill Wilson, E.C. Highsmith,
Leon Corbett and W.C. Duncan headed out for a
fishing trip along the Northeast Cape Fear River.
They were fishing for shad when the “big one”
became entangled in their net. They stood in shock
looking at the fish they pulled in with the net. It
ended up being a 312 pound, 8-foot-long Sturgeon.
Upon catching the fish, they brought it to the Pender
Cold Storage and Freezer Locker and proceeded to cut
it into steaks. The fish also produced 62 pounds of
sturgeon roe, also known as caviar, that was
discovered during the cleaning process. Some of that
meat went into the freezer and the rest was delivered
to the home of E.C. Highsmith for a fish -fry that was
going to be given for one of Burgaw’s civic
organizations. That is where the trouble began. While
the fish fry was taking place, District Game Warden,
E.L. Nicholson seized the fish. The seven buddies
were charged unlawful possession of the sturgeon and
the fish was taken to James Walker Memorial Hospital
in Wilmington.
At the time, the law book of North Carolina Game
and Fishery Commission Rule Number 9 stated that is
unlawful to take, have in possession, or offer for sale,
or ship, any of the following fish under lengths
designated. A number of
different types of fish were
listed in the law with
sturgeon heading the list
with the lawful length
being over five feet, but further in the same law book,
Rule Number 163 read that it shall be unlawful to take,
catch, or have in possession sturgeon taken from the
waters of North Carolina.
It is unclear as to if the seven men were ever convicted
of being in possession of a sturgeon, but, at the time,
it was typical that when two laws were conflicting, the
court would typically rule in favor of the defendant.
Today the law states that there is no open season for
sturgeon in North Carolina. Any sturgeon caught
must be immediately released.
