Busy week for Firehouse 15
As we conclude Fire Prevention Week, we want to let everyone to know that the fun is not over
yet as we continue to celebrate throughout the month!
This past week our Fire Marshal and crews, were able to visit multiple different places in our
community and help spread the importance of working smoke alarms.
This years message for fire prevention is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You! ”. Our fire
department knows that smoke alarms are not a one size fits all. We want to make sure that
everyone knows that if you are hard of hearing or deaf, that there are special types of smoke
alarms out there that can protect you the best way possible. These types of smoke alarms
include alarms that are bed shakers or visual strobes to alert the person.
Once again if you do not have smoke alarms, please reach out to Fire Marshal Kratovel as she
can help aid in getting smoke alarms and installing them through our partnership with the Red
Cross.
We are so excited to announce many upcoming public events happening throughout the rest of
the month. Check out below for some of our events.
We hope everyone will join us next week with their little ones to help us decorate the front pad
of our fire station the day before Autumn Festival. Show off your artwork and hang out with our
firefighters!
We can’t wait to update everyone next week with our visits as they continue on into next week
and the rest of the month.
Until next week, remember…. Prevention vs. Reaction!

Robert E Ebert, the son of Anthony and Lula Croom Ebert, was born on February 15, 1893 in Burgaw,
North Carolina. As a child, Ebert’s family moved to Columbia, South Carolina. As an adult, Ebert
operated the Company Grocery Store in Columbia. In 1925 when the owner of that store decided to
“phase” that particular store out, Ebert purchased the store and renamed it “Home Stores”. Ebert met,
fell in love with, and married a young lady whose father owned the Dixie
Store grocery store chain. By 1937, Home Stores and Dixie Store merged to
become Dixie Home Stores. This merger
resulted in 113 stores in South Carolina, 47 in North Carolina and 2 in
Georgia. The stores continued to grow in number as Ebert purchased
several other grocery stores around the nation. Dixie Home Stores remained
in operation until 1955 when the chain merged with Winn -Lovett Grocery
Company. Winn-Dixie was the result of that merger. Robert
Ebert passed away in August 1968.

We would like to remind the Town of Burgaw residents and family members of the RU Okay? program established by the
Burgaw Police Department. The program calls individuals weekly to check their safety and security. The program is open to
Burgaw residents who are elderly, shut ins, or just could use someone to check in on them throughout the week. Those
individuals are also notified during inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes or ice storms of safety concerns. If you
or a family member are interested in being added to the program, please contact the Burgaw Police Department at 910-259
-4924.
