It’s Friday!
We hope everyone had a wonderful week and is staying cool in this heat!
We had a blast spending time with everyone on the Fourth of July and are so thankful for everyone’s support.
As we move along through summer, our heat indexes continue to climb up well into the 90’s. We urge everyone to
monitor themselves closely while out in the heat. Stay on top of hydration, to help avoid headaches, and muscle
cramps.
The kids are out of school, and summer is in full swing. While visiting beaches, or playing in pools, please err on the
side of caution.
Our partners at Safe Kids state that drowning is “the leading cause of injury -related death among children ages 1 -
4". It is also the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children 19 and under.
While having fun in the water, our Fire Marshal urges everyone to:
• Watch kids when they are in the water or close to any bodies of water
• Keep children within arms reach of an adult, especially weaker
swimmers, even experienced swimmers
• Designate a Water Watcher, an adult who is responsible for watching
the children in or near the water
• Make sure children understand that swimming in open water is
different in a pool
For more swimming tips, you can visit our friends at https://
www.safekids.org/tip/swimming-safety-tips
We hope everyone has a safe weekend!
Until next week,
A Message from our Burgaw Fire Department

The Transportation Planning Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), in cooperation with
Pender County and its municipalities, and the Cape Fear Rural Planning Organization, is developing a Comprehensive
Transportation Plan (CTP) for Pender County. The Pender County CTP will be a multi -modal plan that identifies the
existing and future transportation system, including highways, public transportation, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian
facilities and the ferry system that serve the current and anticipated travel demand. This will be a long -range plan that
identifies major transportation improvements that will be needed over the next 30 years. This survey is a means of
identifying transportation issues that are important to the citizens, officials and businesses in and around Pender
County. Your input is vital in developing a plan that meets the future needs of the people who live, work or visit in
Pender County.

Keeping our pedestrians safe
The Town of Burgaw has plenty of walking trails and sidewalks for our citizens
to utilize every day. It is important to keep our pedestrians safe by knowing
and following the laws of pedestrians' right -of-way at crosswalks. General
Statute § 20-173, Pedestrians' right-of-way at crosswalks, advises where traffic
-control signals are not in place or in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall
yield the right -of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a
pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any
unmarked crosswalk at or near an intersection. Whenever any vehicle is
stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an
intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any
other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such
stopped vehicle. Also, the driver of a vehicle emerging from or entering an
alley, building entrance, private road, or driveway shall yield the right -of-way
to any pedestrian, or person riding a bicycle, approaching on any sidewalk or
walkway extending across such alley, building entrance, road, or driveway.
SAFETY FIRST!
Safety is our top priority for the town. Our
Rapid Flashing Beacons are to assist our
residents with crossing our streets safely.
Please remember to press the button before
crossing the street and as always, look for
traffic before crossing!
Did you know...
It is against the Town’s Municipal Code to deposit your grass clippings and other yard waste into the road. Grass clippings
are made mostly of water and can create unsafe road conditions especially for motorcycle and bicycle riders.
Yard debris build up can also get caught in the Town’s storm drain system and can cause drainage issues and localized
flooding.
Instead, you can…
• Take a few passes near the roadway with an unenclosed blower towards your yard.
• Bag your clippings and other yard waste to be picked up by Public Works.
• Mix grass clippings with leaves and soil to make a backyard compost pile.
• Leave the clippings on your lawn allowing grass clippings to decompose and release
water and nutrients back into your lawn’s soil.
We encourage everyone to help the Town maintain a safe roadway environment for all users!
