Mayor Dawson proclaims April 28-May 4
as National Small Business W eek
WHEREAS America’s strongest economic growth in almost 40
years has been driven by the resilience of our small businesses
that, despite a worldwide pandemic, continue to pioneer innovative
solutions to our country ’s greatest challenges and create
opportunities for families and workers; and
WHEREAS small businesses remain the heartbeat of our
communities and the American economy, employing more than
half of our Nation ’s workers, inventing and innovating to launch
new technologies and create new American-led industries,
enriching our Main Streets, making parts and products in America
to fuel our supply chains, and building our Nation ’s infrastructure;
and
WHEREAS historic investments made through the President’s
American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act,
CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act will ensure
small businesses have access to federal capital support, technical
assistance, contracting opportunities, and other resources to help
lead the way as we rebuild America ’s roads and bridges and build
a clean energy economy for the future; and
WHEREAS when we support small businesses, jobs are created,
and local communities preserve their unique culture; and
WHEREAS entrepreneurship continues to be one of the best
pathways to the American Dream, evidenced by the remarkable
small business boom, with more than 10.5 million Americans
applying to start a business since January 20, 2021 — more than in
any other two-year period in American history; and
WHEREAS by renewing our commitment to supporting small
businesses, we can maintain our global competitiveness and build
a stronger Nation where everyone can succeed - from the bottom
up and middle out; and
WHEREAS the President of the United States has proclaimed
National Small Business Week every year since 1963 to highlight
the programs and services available to entrepreneurs through the
U.S. Small Business Administration and other government
agencies; and
WHEREAS the Town of Burgaw supports and joins in this
national effort to recognize the contributions of small businesses to
the American economy and their importance to ensuring that our
local communities remain as vibrant tomorrow as they are today.
NOW, THEREFORE , I, Olivia Dawson, Mayor of the Town of
Burgaw, do hereby proclaim April 28 through May 4, 2024, as
NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK.
Dated the ninth day of April, 2024.
Olivia Dawson, Mayor
Over half of all home electrical fires
involve lighting equipment or home
electrical wiring
• Plug only one heat-producing appliance
(such as a coffee maker, space heater, or
microwave) directly into a wall outlet at
a time.
• Extension cords should only be used
temporarily. Have an electrician install
additional wall outlets where you need
them.
• Never use an extension cord with a heat-
producing appliance.
• Don’t overload extension cords or wall
outlets.
• Check your electrical cords. If they are
cracked or damaged, replace them.
Don’t try to repair them.
• Use light bulbs that match the
recommended wattage on the lamp or
fixture.
• Electrical work should only be done by a
qualified electrician.

GREASE GOBLIN
Most sanitary sewer backups occur between your home and the town’s sewer main? You can help prevent a costly and
unsanitary overflow by following a few simple steps:
• Scrape excess grease in a container and dispose of it in the garbage.
• Place food scraps in waste containers or garbage bags for disposal with solid
wastes, or start a compost pile; promote use of scraping ware prior to washing.
• Place a wastebasket in the bathroom to dispose of solid wastes. Disposable
diapers and personal hygiene products do not belong in the sewer system.
• Promote the concept of “3 R’s” - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
• Pour grease, fats, and oils from cooking down the drain.
• Use the toilet as a wastebasket.
• Use the sewer as a means of disposing food scraps.
