Our T own
Burgaw Fire Marshal urges everyone to check their
smoke alarms
If you’ve watched the news lately, you may have seen the fires in
our area over the past couple of weeks. The tragedies that have
occurred recently, have impacted us all.
We want to leave some tidbits of information with you today:
Did you know...
Roughly 3 out of 5 deaths happen in residents with either
no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that do not work.
But also, did you know...
The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with
working smoke alarms.
We urge everyone to check that they have working
smoke alarms IN and OUTSIDE of sleeping areas!
If you do have smoke alarms, check and make sure they
are working and functioning as they should. We understand that the chirp can be annoying when
the battery starts dying. Do not take the batteries out and leave them out. Replace the batteries
and if you can’t, call your local fire department and have them come out and help.
If you are unable to buy smoke alarms, there are programs in place to help get them free of cost.
The Burgaw Fire Department offers free checklists that can help residents make sure their home is
safe.
Also, make sure to check on your family members, neighbors, and friends. Express the importance
of working smoke alarms to them, and if they need help point them in the right direction.
If you have any questions, or need/want safety information, you can always reach out to our town
Fire Marshal. Her information can be found below but also on the town website.
Help us, help you, be fire safe!
