Burgaw Parks, Recreation & Tourism presents its first
On March 26, 2024, at approximately 6:20
pm, a fight occurred in the vicinity of 500
West Hayes Street in Burgaw, NC. A family
member of one of the individuals involved in
the fight fired a handgun into the air, “to
break up the fight”.
An officer with the Burgaw Police Department
was in Pender Memorial Park, which is adjacent to the area of the
fight. The officer called for more law enforcement officers as he ran
towards the area where the shots were fired from. Other officers, as
well as Deputies from the Pender County Sheriff ’s Office, responded
to the area.
The subject who fired the gun was quickly taken into custody and the
firearm was seized.
Destiny Autumn Murphy, a 25-year-old, Black Female from Currie, NC
was taken into custody and charged with discharging a Firearm
within the town limits of Burgaw (Misdemeanor). She was given a
court date of June 25, 2024, at 9:00 am, at the Pender County
Courthouse.
This was an isolated incident that did not occur in Pender Memorial
Park but was adjacent to the property. We understand this incident
was extremely concerning for parents and children. In light of this
incident, town and county officials have met to reassess and enhance
safety protocols at Pender Memorial Park. We look forward to
working with the athletic clubs to help keep our parks safe.
We urge anyone with additional information regarding this incident
to contact the Burgaw Police Department or Pender County Sheriff ’s
Office.

Happy Easter Everyone!
We are sure everyone is looking
forward to the three day break this
weekend. Hopefully spent with
family and friends enjoying the days.
During the holidays, we are either
getting ready to visit family or
getting ready to host family. It can be
chaotic, so let us help you stay safe.
As we move forward into this holiday
weekend, here are a few safety
treats for your basket:
• Remember, never leave anything you
are cooking unattended.
• Children should not be in close
proximity to hot items that can lead
to burns.
• Make sure anything that can burn is away from heat sources while cooking.
• While participating in all those egg hunts, make sure children stay away
from roads.
• With all the excitement, make sure you are not getting distracted while
driving.
We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday.
