Happy International Women’s Day!
As we celebrate International Women ’s Day, we wanted to take a
minute to not only shine a light on the women who serve in the fire
department but as well as the ladies in the town office who keep our
department running, and our Police Department family, who have some
incredible women we get to serve alongside of.
As we continue into this month, we take a moment to
share a few interesting facts. It is stated that women
only make up approximately 4.7% of all career
firefighters in the United States. This is seemingly the
same around the globe. The first woman in the world
to become a career firefighter, Judith Livers, would not
do so until 1974, and would finish her career as a
Battalion Chief. We saw more and more women
entering the career as the 1970’s continued. These
women would go on to pave the way for the rest of the women in the
service present and in the future to come.
Though still a primarily male dominant career, Burgaw Fire
Department is lucky in the fact that we hold two paid women on the
department, as well as four female volunteers. Of the women who serve
in the department, one holds position as the Fire Marshal for the town,
who has over 10 years in the service. The next, a paid firefighter/driver
operator, is also the Assistant Chief of her
volunteer fire department, over 10 years in the
service. One of our volunteers, is a paid
Apparatus Operator for New Hanover County
and holds a Captain position within our
department, another marking over 10 years in the
service. Another is a Fire Protection Program
Lead with GE Fire Brigade, with over 20 years
in the service.
We are simply grateful to have all of these dedicated women as a part
of our department. We have watched them grow and serve along side
the rest of our members, never wavering or faltering. We look forward
to seeing the next generation of female firefighters joining us. We hope
any of those who are interested or intrigued by the service will stop by
and talk about volunteer options.
Stay safe friends!
